GM's New Small-Block V8s Just Turned Everyday Silverados Into Quiet Sleepers
402 hp in the base V8 and 481 hp in the big one — in trucks that still look like work trucks. That is sleeper energy whether GM markets it that way or not.
The Corvette Got The Headlines. The Trucks Got The Engines That Matter.
GM’s sixth-generation small-block debuted in the Corvette Grand Sport. The versions that will actually reshape driveway conversations are the L76 and L78 headed for the 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 — nicer, rounder displacements and a lot more punch than the EcoTec3 pair they replace.
The Numbers Are Not Subtle
The L76 5.7 replaces the old 5.3 and jumps from 355 hp / 383 lb-ft to 402 hp / 428 lb-ft. GM claims a Silverado tow rating as high as 13,700 pounds with that engine. The L78 6.6 replaces the old 6.2 and moves from 420 hp / 460 lb-ft to 481 hp / 501 lb-ft. Same pushrod SOHC family architecture and 4.4-inch bore spacing — just more cubes, more compression, and bigger throttle bodies.
The Four-Cylinder Got Homework Too
The 2.7 TurboMax picks up 40 hp and 25 lb-ft, landing at 350 hp and 455 lb-ft. The 3.0 Duramax diesel holds its 305 hp / 495 lb-ft rating but gets internal tweaks for performance and reliability. The 6.7-liter, 535 hp Corvette variant stays in the sports car; trucks get the 5.7 and 6.6.
Payload And Towing Still Decide The Checkbox
On paper, the 5.7 is the towing hero while the hotter 6.6 trades some max tow/payload for the kind of thrust that turns a crew cab into a traffic-light sleeper. Configuration still rules — trim, axle, and packages will move the real numbers — but the direction is clear: GM is not abandoning gas V8 personality in its volume trucks.
My Take
If you shop Silverado or Sierra incentives on Carced, this is the mid-cycle story that will rewrite comparison charts next model year. A work truck with nearly 500 hp does not need a body kit to feel special. Just make sure you are comparing the right powertrain package when dealers start stacking 2027 lease cash — horsepower is free marketing until the residual and fuel costs show up in the payment.
Are you waiting for the new 5.7/6.6 trucks, or is TurboMax/diesel still the smarter daily play? I want to hear how tow buyers are handicapping this.
