Ford Recalled 86 Mach-Es Because A Battery Repair Made The Range Gauge Lie
The range number on an EV is sacred. These Mach-Es got a repair that told the car its used battery was brand-new — and that lie can strand you.
The Gauge Lied Because The Repair Assumed A New Pack
There are few numbers an EV driver trusts more than remaining range. Ford is recalling certain 2023–2025 Mustang Mach-Es with lithium iron phosphate batteries because a replacement Battery Energy Control Module initialized State of Health at a factory-fresh 100 percent instead of inheriting the battery’s actual health.
Tiny Recall, Full Defect Rate
Only 86 vehicles are covered — and Ford estimates every one of them has the defect. That is an unusually clean recall math story: small population, high certainty, software-shaped root cause.
What Drivers Actually See
Because the car thinks the pack is healthier than it is, it can also show an artificially high State of Charge. Ford says that discrepancy can eventually trigger unexpected power limitation and a complete loss of motive power, often with a wrench or turtle warning as the car starts protecting itself. For a commuting EV, a lying SOC is not a curiosity — it is a stranding risk.
The Charging Side Is The Scary Part
Incorrect SOH math may increase lithium plating during accumulated DC fast-charging cycles. Severe plating can raise the risk of thermal venting and, in the worst case, fire. Ford says it is not aware of crashes, injuries, or fires tied to this issue yet, and it had not identified field reports specifically about the SOH overestimation problem as of the filing.
My Take
The fix is a software update that lets the BECM read and use the battery’s real State of Health — exactly the kind of recall that should be scheduled immediately even when the VIN count is tiny. If you own a 2023–2025 Mach-E with an LFP pack that has had a BECM replacement, check with Ford before you treat the dash percentage as gospel.
